Understanding Polling Rate Jitter & Stability

What Is Polling Rate Jitter?
When a mouse is set to 1000Hz, the theoretical arrival time between every report is exactly 1.000 ms. In reality, USB transfer queues, thread scheduling in the OS kernel, and 2.4GHz wireless noise introduce tiny variations in timing.
Jitter is the mathematical standard deviation of those arrival intervals. If interval readings alternate between 0.8ms, 1.2ms, 0.9ms, and 1.1ms, the mouse has low, healthy jitter. But if intervals regularly spike to 5ms or 10ms followed by rapid bursts of reports, jitter is high.
How High Jitter Hurts Gaming Aim
Competitive FPS game engines (Source 2, Unreal Engine) calculate camera rotation based on the latest mouse delta received between rendered frames. High jitter causes coordinate packet bunching: the game engine receives zero movement for two frames, then a double-sized coordinate burst on the third frame, manifesting as noticeable crosshair stutter.
