Mouse Button Test

Verify Left Click, Right Click, Middle Wheel Click, and Back/Forward side buttons with an interactive visual mouse map. Free, instant, browser-based.

Quick Answer • Diagnostic Summary

A mouse button test verifies that all physical mouse buttons—Left Click (0), Middle Click (1), Right Click (2), Back Side Button (3), and Forward Side Button (4)—actuate and release correctly without dropped signals or sticking.

What Is a Mouse Button Test?

Modern computer mice feature at least five standard buttons: primary Left and Right buttons, a clickable scroll wheel, and two thumb navigation buttons.

Operating systems communicate button presses via the W3C Pointer Events API using specific integer indices. This test provides a live interactive visual mouse schematic that intercepts standard browser events (preventing accidental context menus or page navigation) to verify that every switch engages and disengages cleanly.

It also tracks real-time press counters and held-down states to diagnose sticky switches and intermittent contact breaks.

How to Test All Mouse Buttons

1Hover Over the Test Area

Move your mouse over the interactive schematic to enable button event interception.

2Click Left and Right Buttons

Click LMB and RMB. Right-clicking within the test pad is intercepted to prevent the browser context menu.

3Press the Scroll Wheel Down

Click the middle wheel button straight down to verify Middle Click (button index 1).

4Click Thumb Side Buttons

Press your mouse Back and Forward side buttons to test navigation switches 3 and 4.

5Verify Counter Increments

Check that each button's press counter increments accurately with each tap.

Mouse Button Troubleshooting

Side buttons (Button 3 & 4) do not register in the test

Cause: Vendor software has remapped side buttons to custom keyboard shortcuts or media keys rather than standard mouse navigation.

Solution: Open your mouse utility (Logitech G HUB, Razer Synapse, etc.) and reset side buttons to default 'Back' and 'Forward' mouse commands.
Middle mouse click requires heavy force to actuate

Cause: Worn tactile dome switch underneath the scroll wheel axle or accumulated lint blocking downward travel.

Solution: Clean around the scroll wheel axle with compressed air. If the tactile switch has collapsed, replacement is required.
Right clicking opens browser menu instead of testing

Cause: Clicking outside the designated test canvas boundary.

Solution: Ensure the mouse cursor is located inside the dashed interactive diagnostic container before clicking.
Side Buttons and Browser Capabilities

Browsers natively support 5 standard mouse buttons (0 through 4). Mice equipped with 12-button MMO side grids or specialized DPI-shift buttons transmit those extra keys as virtual keystrokes or proprietary HID vendor packets, which cannot be captured without vendor drivers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I test mouse side buttons?
Hover your cursor over the test schematic and click your thumb buttons. Standard browser navigation buttons (Back and Forward) will immediately highlight buttons 3 and 4 on screen.
Why is my middle click not working?
Middle wheel switches frequently fail before primary buttons due to heavy dust accumulation on the internal tactile switch or a worn plastic axle lever. Cleaning the wheel well with compressed air often restores actuation.
Can browsers detect all buttons on a 12-button MMO mouse?
No. Browsers only natively support standard mouse buttons 0 through 4. Extra MMO buttons are usually mapped to keyboard number keys (1, 2, 3...) in vendor software, which you can test using our Keyboard Tester.
Why does right-clicking usually open a menu?
By default, browsers listen for the contextmenu event on right-click. Our test intercepts and prevents the default action inside the test pad so your right click can be verified without opening menus.
